Begin With the Program You Actually Want to Build
A collegiate esports program generally needs computers or consoles, monitors, peripherals, furniture, wired networking, software, storage, security, and enough power and cooling to keep everything running. Some programs will also need cameras, microphones, lighting, and streaming equipment. That sounds like a straightforward shopping list, but a recreational lounge, varsity practice room, academic lab, and broadcast arena use that equipment in very different ways.
Before choosing products, decide which games the program will support, how many students will use the room at once, and what else will happen there. Will the space host classes, tournaments, livestreams, summer camps, or club events? Those answers keep the university from buying impressive technology that looks exciting on opening day but does not quite fit the program.
Choose Computers Based on What Students Will Play
Gaming computers are usually the largest equipment expense, so it is understandable when people immediately focus on processors and graphics cards. Still, the goal is not to buy the most powerful machine available. Each computer needs to run the selected games smoothly, survive long practices and tournaments, and remain useful for several years.
VALORANT, Rocket League, League of Legends, and Overwatch 2 do not have the same demands as virtual reality, racing simulation, video editing, or advanced production. Its esports facilities show why equipment should follow the activity rather than one standard specification.
Do Not Underestimate Monitors and Peripherals
A powerful computer cannot deliver its full value through the wrong monitor. Refresh rate, resolution, screen size, adjustability, and connection options all influence the playing experience. The computer also needs to produce enough frames to make that high-refresh-rate display worthwhile.
Keyboards, mice, headsets, and controllers may be less expensive than computers, but students handle them constantly. They wear out, require cleaning, and have a mysterious habit of disappearing when spares are needed most. Programs should standardize their basic equipment, keep replacements nearby, and decide whether varsity players can bring their preferred peripherals.
Treat the Network Like Competition Equipment
Fast campus internet does not automatically guarantee a stable esports connection. Competitive stations should normally use wired Ethernet because consistency matters during matches, broadcasts, downloads, and team communication. IT staff should be involved early enough to plan cabling, network capacity, security, authentication, game updates, and access to publisher services.
The network also has to support everything happening around the players. Spectators may be using Wi-Fi while students stream a match and dozens of computers download the same update. Make Sure the Room Can Handle the Equipment
Thirty gaming computers produce far more heat than 30 students using laptops. A classroom may appear large enough while lacking the circuits, outlets, ventilation, or cooling required when every station is occupied. Facilities and IT teams should examine those conditions before the university commits to a layout or places an equipment order.
Furniture matters here too. Desks need to support equipment, manage cables, preserve airflow, and leave technicians enough room to work, while chairs must remain comfortable through frequent use. The layout also needs clear walkways, safe exits, good visibility, and enough space for coaches to move without bumping into players.
Build Accessibility Into the Whole Room
Accessibility should not mean placing one adjustable desk in a corner and declaring the room finished. Students need to enter the facility, move through it, communicate with teammates, reach controls, adjust displays, and use the technology comfortably. Height-adjustable desks, flexible monitor arms, alternative controllers, movable seating, and thoughtful cable placement can make participation easier for many students.

Their input should arrive before purchasing, not after installation.
Add Broadcasting Equipment for a Reason
Broadcasting can turn a match into a campus event and give students experience in directing, commentary, audio, graphics, cameras, and live production. A basic setup may use a production computer, microphones, cameras, capture devices, lighting, monitors, and streaming software. More ambitious programs may add commentary booths, replay systems, audio mixers, multiple cameras, and a control room.
The investment should reflect how often the university plans to broadcast. Ohio University’s esports broadcasting program gives students hands-on production roles, connecting competition with education and career development. If streaming will only happen occasionally, a flexible mobile setup may be plenty; if it supports classes and regular tournaments, it belongs in the original facility plan.
Plan for Storage, Security, and Spares
Esports facilities contain valuable equipment that receives heavy daily use, so secure storage cannot be an afterthought. Programs need room for controllers, cables, cleaning supplies, production equipment, student-owned gear, and replacement parts. Controlled access, checkout procedures, asset tracking, and lockable cabinets can protect equipment without making the room feel like a vault.
A few spare mice, keyboards, headsets, controllers, and cables can keep a small problem from becoming a missed match. Staff should also know who handles repairs, what the warranties cover, and how quickly replacements can arrive. A low purchase price loses its appeal when a failed component leaves a station unusable for weeks.
Budget for the Next Upgrade Now
Computers, monitors, furniture, network hardware, and headsets will not all wear out together. A realistic plan includes warranties, software subscriptions, maintenance, replacement peripherals, and a schedule for refreshing computers over several budget years. Setting aside that money gradually is much easier than asking leadership to replace the entire room unexpectedly.
The right equipment list is the one that fits the program’s games, students, space, and operating budget. When computers, networking, furniture, accessibility, broadcasting, storage, and support are treated as one connected system, the facility becomes easier to manage and grow. That planning may be less exciting than choosing dramatic lighting or the newest graphics card, but it is what keeps the room working after the opening-day photos are finished.
