Missouri State University’s Esports Team Makes History with National Championship Win

Missouri State University’s esports program has achieved a significant milestone,

with its Overwatch team securing the university’s first-ever national championship.

This victory at the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) Project I National Championship

on May 11th in San Antonio, Texas,

shows the growing success and impact of collegiate esports programs nationwide.

A Triumphant Season

The Missouri State Overwatch team battled fiercely,

ultimately defeating Mount Saint Mary’s University in the grand final to claim the prestigious title.

This win is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and rapid development of the players throughout the season.

“We’re incredibly proud of our players and all they accomplished this season,” said Terry Weber,

director of Plaster Student Union and esports advisor.

“This championship is not only a testament to their hard work and dedication,

but also to the rapid growth of the players and interest in esports at Missouri State.

Qualifying for and competing in the Project I Championship has elevated

our program and provided invaluable experience for our students.”

Elevating Collegiate Esports

The NECC’s Project I initiative, launched last year,

plays a crucial role in promoting the growth and development of esports programs

at NCAA Division I member institutions.

Missouri State’s victory within this framework underscores

the increasing level of competition and the rising standards in collegiate esports.

Growth and Recognition at Missouri State

Missouri State’s esports program features three competing teams with a total of 16 student-athletes.

This year marked a significant step forward as the university awarded its first-ever esports scholarships ($1,500 each)

within the Missouri Valley Conference esports program.

This move signifies the growing recognition and integration of competitive gaming into higher education,

mirroring the support offered to traditional athletes.

Beyond the national title, the program also secured two Missouri Valley Conference championships this season,

demonstrating consistent excellence.

Nurturing Future Talent with Summer Camps

Looking to the future, Missouri State is actively nurturing the next generation of esports talent by hosting summer camps.

These programs, designed for middle schoolers in June and July,

offer aspiring young players the chance to sharpen their skills and experience competitive gaming firsthand.

The camps uniquely blend recreational and competitive gameplay with STEM-accredited programming,

led by university coaches and athletes, showcasing the educational value embedded within esports.

Missouri State University’s national championship win is a powerful statement about the increasing legitimacy,

competitive spirit, and educational opportunities within collegiate esports.

It highlights how universities are investing in these programs to foster student success,

both in and out of the game.
